A Lyme Disease Search Portal: Lyme disease also known as borreliosis, is an infectious disease caused by bacteria from the genus Borrelia. Lyme disease typically results from the bite of an infected black-legged or deer tick. Borrelia burgdorferi is the major cause of Lyme disease in the United States and Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii are causal in Europe. Symptoms vary widely, and may include a rash and flu-like symptoms in the initial stages. Later stages may include musculoskeletal, arthritic, neurologic, psychiatric and cardiac symptoms. Antibiotics can eliminate the symptoms in most cases, especially with early treatment. "Late stage" lyme disease may result from late or inadequate treatment.
